In the last meeting of the Amsterdam Reading Group we read 'Bad Aboriginal Art' (1987) by the visual anthropologist Eric Michaels and 'Bell's Theorem: Aboriginal Art - It's A White Thing' (2002) by the Aboriginal artist Richard Bell to think through some issues of appropriation in an Australian context, with a particular focus on Aboriginal art. Through these texts we discussed issues of authority, opacity, and how value is ascribed or understood in the translation of art objects and images across cultures.

For this session we will again depart from Australia through a consideration of the collaborative art practice of Howard Arkley and Juan Davila. The text is by Georgia Jones, "The Man with Two Faces: Quoting the Collaborative Hand of Howard Arkley and Juan Davila" (2013).

We will also extend the geographical scope to consider the context of the Philippines, in response to some of the closing comments of the last session, through a discussion of the essay by Patrick D. Flores, 'Social Realism: The Turns of A Term in the Philippines' (2013), published recently in Afterall. Many thanks to Yoeri Guepin for reflagging this text with us.

We will also be reading towards a consideration of the Senegalese artist collective Laboratoire Agit-Art in the following Reading Group on 12 March, which is the subject of If I Can't Dance's symposium to be held as part of Studium Generale Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam on 21 March.
