For the next session of the Amsterdam Reading Group, we will read around the work of Adrian Piper, an artist whose work came to be known to a large audience around the same time as Louise Lawler and the 'Pictures Generation' artists, though was at the fringe of the movement.

We'll be reading an essay written by artist Emma Hedditch, a longtime collaborator of If I Can't Dance, who has in the last two years taught a course with us at the Dutch Art Institute. Her essay 'Stay Away, Don't Stay Away' was written in 2005 and discusses Piper's work and its strong impact on her own practice, and also addresses the difficulty of writing about another's work.

In addition we are reading a series of collected short texts by Adrian Piper, titled 'Notes on Funk I-IV (1983-1984)', from her book Out of Order, Out of Sight, Selected Writings in Meta-Art, vol 1, 1968-1992 (from 1996). We also ask Reading Group members to watch a short clip of Piper's performance Funk Lessons.
