      Curating Academy #3

    2. For the first meeting of the year, guest Jacob Korczynski is invited to share his curatorial practice with the students. In the morning he will speak about several projects that he curated in the past years, including Fluiten in het Donker as part of the Appel Curatorial Programme in Amsterdam. He will also speak about Many Fires, a site-specific group exhibition he co-curated in urban space, and Satellite, a film-performance that he commissioned by Redmond Entwistle. Within the institutional context he curated A Small Part of Something Larger, a solo exhibition by the Toronto-based artist Stephen Andrews for the Dunlop Art Gallery, and Approximate And At a Distance, a project developed with Emma Hedditch for the virtrines of the Art Gallery of York University (AGYU) in Toronto.

      In the evening, Jacob Korczynski will present a film programme titled

      Jacob Korczynski is an independent curator based in Toronto. A recent participant in the de Appel Curatorial Programme, he has curated projects for the Dunlop Art Gallery, SAW Gallery, Vtape, Gallery TPW and the Art Gallery of York University amongst others, and his writing has appeared in Prefix Photo, Ciel Variable, Border Crossings, C Magazine and Fillip. A former member of the Pleasure Dome collective, he was also the co-curator of Print Generation and From Instructions, the 22nd and 23rd editions of the Images Festival. Currently, he is developing a research project for the Performance in Residence programme of If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution.

      On Thursday Frédérique Bergholtz and Grant Watson will be present for face to face meetings.

      Curating Academy is a yearlong course offered to second-year students of the Dutch Art Institute, that is taught by Grant Watson and Frederique Bergholtz and coordinated by Tanja Baudoin. The course looks into methodologies of curating and closely studies examples from the practice of tutors and guests. The project will work towards making an exhibition for September 2013, with a contribution by each student. In monthly meetings, tutors and guests will unpack the nature of the ‘graduation exhibition’ and explore ways of working and presenting together.
