For our first session of the new DAI course, tutor Matthew Lutz-Kinoy will be present with Tanja Baudoin. Students are asked to read an email interview between Sharon Hayes and Yvonne Rainer in which they speak about performance and about repetition and re-enactment, as
well as their relationships with other artists and with the audience.
During the meeting, the group is introduced to the programme of this year's course. Following a warm up exercise in the space, Matthew Lutz-Kinoy will introduce his work and a variety of other practices that relate to his current research into sound and abstract cinema. The group will begin to map a field of collective interest.
If I Can't Dance's course at DAI this year is constructed around
sessions with recurring tutor Matthew Lutz-Kinoy and sessions with our
Commissioned Artists
Gerry Bibby,
Sara van der Heide,
Snejanka Mihaylova
and
Emily Roysdon. At the end of the year, a collective performative work, developed with Matthew, will be presented publically.
The artist-tutors are asked to take an aspect central to their current working methodology as a
guiding principle to explore ideas about performance with the group. Alongside a shared
interest in working performatively, all five artists - Matthew, Emily,
Sara, Snejanka and Gerry - have adopted a responsiveness to If I Can't
Dance's current research field, of 'appropriation and dedication'.
