At If I Can't Dance's second workshop at the Dutch Art Institute this academic year,
Sara van der Heide will be present as tutor. Sara will be introducing her practice to the students. She will also speak about her interest in the 1913 opera Victory over the Sun, a collaboration by Aleksei Kruchenykh, Velimir Khlebnikov and Kazimir Malevich, who designed the costumes and the set. In the piece they proposed to capture and destroy the ‘sun’, the symbol of rationality.
Students are asked to think about how we can relate to the figure of the sun today, what it might represent and what values or objects there are to capture and destroy, or nurture, today. The ideas will be translated into short performances of 5 minutes, using self-made backgrounds.
If I Can't Dance's course at DAI this year is constructed around
sessions with recurring tutor Matthew Lutz-Kinoy and sessions with our
Commissioned Artists
Gerry Bibby,
Sara van der Heide,
Snejanka Mihaylova
and
Emily Roysdon. At the end of the year, a collective performative work, developed with Matthew, will be presented publically.
