As part of the group exhibition, Extra Citizen, which will reopen Kunsthal Extra City in Antwerp, Grant Watson will exhibit three new interviews in his ongoing series How We Behave. Inspired by an interview published in Vanity Fair in 1983, in which Michel Foucault asked why can’t life be ‘the material for a work of art?’ Watson’s interviews focus on people’s behaviour—how they work on themselves, how they reflect on their lives and on their relationships to others. Commissioned for the occasion, the three new interviews are with Brussels and Antwerp based artists and activists.

Within the context of Extra Citizen, the interviews contribute to the exhibition’s aim to “draw on the imagination of contemporary artists to inspire a reflection on the scope of citizenship today, particularly in cities that are faced with an urgency to adapt to the diversity of their inhabitants.” Curated by Antonia Alampi and iLiana Fokianaki, Grant Watson’s work appears alongside those by Meriç Algün, Younes Baba- Ali, Zbynek Baladran, James Bridle, Bram Demunter, Iman Issa, Cao Fei, Ahmet Ögüt, Dan Perjovschi, Antonis Pittas, Martha Rosler, Marinella Senatore, and Philippe Van Snick. How We Behave is a project by Grant Watson, originally commissioned by If I Can't Dance as part of Edition V – Appropriation and Dedication (2013–2014) and funded by the Mondriaan Fund and the Arts Council of England (the latter in partnership with Nottingham Contemporary and The Showroom). The second phase of the project is co-commissioned by The Showroom and If I Can’t Dance.
