As part of Playground, Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa will present four video works—Illusion of Matter (2015), The Print of Sleep (2016), Mimesis of Mimesis (2016), and Linnæus in Tenebris (2017)—from his cycle of performances, Requiem for Mirrors and Tigers (2015–2017).

This cycle of works was produced as part of Ramírez-Figueroa commission with Corpus and If I Can’t Dance’s VI, Event and Duration, and saw him use his body and direct action to perform a series of images related to the history of the Guatemalan Civil War at punctuated moments and locations across a three year period. In the works he approached the Civil War from a personal position, softening images of it through abstraction and humour, while attempting to use the intensity of the performance schedule to push beyond the immense force of the collective and inscribed memory of the war’s history. Beyond the live performances, the cycle of works now forms a collection of videos.

At Playground, the four selected videos will be presented on a continuous loop within an exhibition space, and will be available for viewing on Thursday 16 November from 5–10pm, and Friday 17 November until Sunday 19 November from 11am–6pm. Illusion of Matter was produced by Tate Modern and was streamed as a live performance in their Performance Room. The Print of Sleep and Mimesis of Mimesis was produced by If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution, as part of VI (2015–2016), Event and Duration. Linnæus in Tenebris was produced by CAPC Bordeaux, as part of Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa’s solo exhibition of the same title.

Each of these videos are part of Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa’s cycle of performances, Requiem for Mirrors and Tigers, which was commissioned and produced as part of Corpus, network for performance practice.
