In March, Jimmy Robert is present at DAI. Students are asked to read The Task of the Translator by Walter Benjamin in advance, and to think about translation and interpretation in relation to appropriation and affect. Following exercises from Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, everyone is asked to read or perform a short written response to the works that were presented in last month’s session. At the end of the day, we will try to give shape to the presentations and discussions through gestures.

Jimmy Robert works with diverse media including photography, collages, objects, art books, short films and performance. In his explorations into the relationship between images and objects, Robert draws attention to the dynamics of different surfaces. Questions of identity and its representation are his main interest, and he uses a variety of references to literature, art and music to emphasise the fragility of the materials he uses.
