On Sunday 15 May, the Sister Reading Group in Toronto will recommence the sessions of their ongoing Reading Group, which is currently focused on If I Can’t Dance’s research field of Edition VI – Event and Duration (2015–2016). For this Edition, the Toronto Reading Group will continue to be lead by the curator Jacob Korczynski and will be hosted at the artist run space, 8-11.
In the first meeting, the group will read excerpts of the art writer and curator Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer’s book Lee Lozano: Dropout Piece (2014), published as part of Afterall Books One Work series, which focuses on artworks that have significantly shaped the way we understand art and its history.
The text will provide a close reading of Lee Lozano’s work Dropout Piece (begun c.1970), comprising her incremental withdrawal from the art world, and ending only with her burial in an unmarked grave. Of the work Lehrer-Graiwer writes: "Dropout Piece, then, is also a large-scale action Lozano carried out over a long period of time in the lived reality of her life that dictated making small-scale decisions on a daily basis, with lifelong, indeed posthumous consequences."
