This month we will look further into Karl Marx’s use of the term appropriation (as referenced in Isabelle Graw’s text). We’ll read in depth sections 3 and 4 of his Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts from 1844. Barbara Kruger and Sherrie Levine’s artists statements from 1982 will be read in resonance (or dissonance) with the text from the 19th century. Peter Stallybrass’ ‘Marx’s Coat’ will offer more of a material history to Marx’s abstract philosophy as it describes how objects (and their memory) were appropriated in late 19th century’s social life.
