The fourth
session of the Toronto Reading Group will be hosted by The Power Plant, within
Jimmy Robert's exhibition Draw the Line.
The discussion will take two short texts as point of departure: Sigmund Freud's
Remembering, Repeating, and
Working-Through and Michael Lobel's Inappropriate
Appropriation about the artist Elaine Sturtevant. The former addresses repetition,
remembering and can be used as a lens with which to think through the role of
writing in Robert's exhibition, and the latter introduces questions of
authorship, originality, and the appropriateness of appropriation as a
discourse itself. Both texts have been suggested by Jimmy Robert and have been
also read as part of the course Occupation
Evacuation Transmission that Robert tutored with If I Can't Dance at the
Dutch Art Institute/MFA ArtEZ earlier this year.
