1. keyon gaskin has some problems with performance, which they counter by negating its conventions—shifting proximities, obscuring lines of vision, and offering little to no context upon which the audience can cling. Through this active undoing, the rules of engagement between the performer and spectator are reframed, as are the limits of what might constitute language and knowledge. As has been written about their work, “It is not your typical theatrical experience, and that is the point.”

      As one of four artists commissioned to produce new work for VII (2017–2018), Social Movement, keyon gaskin will create a number of new performances that trouble the discipline’s form, institutions and conventions by investing in the gaps they find within these, and by pursuing the potentials of gathering.
