The True Story of John Webber and His Endless Struggle with the Table Of Content was developed by Keren Cytter and the dance group Dance International Europe Now as part of Edition III – Masquerade.
It features political activist John Webber and graphic designer Linda Schultz who wake up one morning and notice that they have undergone an unexpected change of sex. The consequences of this incident domino out in society, sexual politics and identity and lead finally to a revolution. The True Story… is a highly stylized theatrical performance, combining different media such as film, language, light projections, and choreography, and is based on a wide range of influences, including Pina Bausch, the Bat- Sheva dance group, Samuel Beckett, Disney on Ice, Michael Jackson, Yvonne Rainer, and the exotic rhythms of the 1980s dance-floor filler the Lambada.
The True Story… is commissioned by If I Can’t Dance, and co-produced by If I Can’t Dance; Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin; Performa, New York; and Tate Modern, London.
