For If I Can’t Dance’s Edition VI – Event and Duration (2015–2016), Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa has been commissioned to produce a cycle of new performance works.
Through these performances, Ramírez-Figueroa will attempt to exhaust his interest in the Guatemalan Civil War as the recurring subject of his work. Waged from 1960 to 1996, the Guatemalan Civil War was fought between the government of Guatemala and leftist rebel groups who were supported by ethnic Mayan indigenous people and Ladino peasants, and is infamous for the genocide against the Mayan population and for widespread human rights violations against civilians.Biography
Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa (b. 1978, Guatemala City, Guatemala) holds a BFA from Emily Carr University, Vancouver and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Using theatre, drawing, literature and sculpture, Ramírez-Figueroa’s work conjures live and sculptural representations that explore themes of loss, identity and displacement. The Guatemalan Civil War (1960–1996) is a recurring subject in his work, which although often softened by an absurd and humorous approach, fails to conceal the force of history that precedes it. Ramírez-Figueroa has participated in various solo and group exhibitions including Rendez-Vous, 13th Lyon Biennale, Lyon (2015); Burning Down the House, 10th Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju (2014); A Chronicle of Interventions, Tate Modern, London, (2014); Illy Present Future, Castello di Rivoli, Torino (2013); Beber y Leer El Arcoiris, Casa América, Madrid (2012); Home Works IV, Ashkal Alwan, Beirut (2008); and 53rd Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, Oberhausen, (2007). He is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Franklin Furnace award, and an Akademie Schloss Solitude fellowship (selected by Dan Graham). He attended the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht in 2013. Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa lives and works in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa is one of four artists commissioned by If I Can’t Dance to produce a new work as part of Edition VI – Event and Duration (2015–2016). Using theatre, drawing, literature and sculpture, Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa’s work conjures live and sculptural representations that explore themes of loss, identity and displacement.
Across the duration of Edition VI, Ramírez-Figueroa will develop a cycle of new performances that attempt to exhaust his interest in the Guatemalan Civil War as the recurring subject of his work.
Ramírez-Figueroa’s new work is commissioned and produced as part of Corpus, network for performance practice. Corpus is Bulegoa z/b (Bilbao), CAC (Vilnius), KW (Berlin), If I Can’t Dance (Amsterdam), Playground (STUK & M, Leuven), and Tate Modern (London). Corpus is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.
