In the January session the students will continue the exercise that they commenced in the previous two classes, in which they were asked to translate a lecture by Euba into different media. In the first class the students used drawing to make simultaneous translations, then later consecutive translations, of the text. In the second session they were asked to translate these still images into moving images and actions using an instrument of objective vision. To assist with this, exercises of adaptation, extension, reduction and compensation were undertaken to reflect on the idea of the frame; objective, subjective and objectified visions; and each ideas relation with action.
During this session, Euba will analyze the recorded translations made by each of the students and provide further directions to them. The screening of works by other artists will complement this activity.
On Praxis, An Unstated Theory (Writing Out Loud) is a yearlong course conceived by artist Jon Mikel Euba at the invitation of and curated by If I Can't Dance, I Don't Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution. The course is coordinated and co-tutored by If I Can't Dance curator Susan Gibb.
Through collaborations with educational programmes, If I Can’t Dance aims to create conditions for a shared exchange of knowledge to take place. The workshops we curate provide theoretical reflection and discussion and practical knowledge on working in the field of performance. We follow students’ artistic practice and development, and the workshops feed back into our own programme of activities.
As part of Edition VI, our longstanding relation with the Dutch Art Institute/MFA ArtEZ in Arnhem continues to develop as we offer the following project in the academic year 2015–2016: ACTION UNITES, WORDS DIVIDE (On praxis an unstated theory) led by the artist Jon Mikel Euba.
Edition VI, also marks a new collaboration with the SNDO – School of New Dance Development in Amsterdam, where If I Can’t Dance will teach courses on Curating and Performance to the second, third and fourth years of its programme. These courses are led by Frédérique Bergholtz and Susan Gibb.
