The October session is the first of the seven workshops comprising On Praxis, An Unstated Theory (Writing Out Loud), and will act as an introduction to the course, as well as to Jon Mikel Euba and each of the students’ respective artistic practices. Working from the idea of ‘abundance’, the workshop will commence with a collective reading of Euba’s text “On Visions, Images and Non Images (Objective view / Subjective view / Objectified vision = Camera / Performer / Director / Audience)”. During the reading the students will be asked to produce a simultaneous of the text through drawing, and later a consecutive translate of these drawings into other media. Each student will also be asked to undertake an exercise where they identify how many moments of new beginnings they have had in their life, and note the technical difficulties associated to these beginnings in each period.
As part of the session each of the students will also have an individual face-to-face meeting with Jon Mikel Euba and Susan Gibb.
On Praxis, An Unstated Theory (Writing Out Loud) is a yearlong course conceived by artist Jon Mikel Euba at the invitation of and curated by If I Can't Dance, I Don't Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution. The course is coordinated and co-tutored by If I Can't Dance curator Susan Gibb.
Through collaborations with educational programmes, If I Can’t Dance aims to create conditions for a shared exchange of knowledge to take place. The workshops we curate provide theoretical reflection and discussion and practical knowledge on working in the field of performance. We follow students’ artistic practice and development, and the workshops feed back into our own programme of activities.
As part of Edition VI, our longstanding relation with the Dutch Art Institute/MFA ArtEZ in Arnhem continues to develop as we offer the following project in the academic year 2015–2016: ACTION UNITES, WORDS DIVIDE (On praxis an unstated theory) led by the artist Jon Mikel Euba.
Edition VI, also marks a new collaboration with the SNDO – School of New Dance Development in Amsterdam, where If I Can’t Dance will teach courses on Curating and Performance to the second, third and fourth years of its programme. These courses are led by Frédérique Bergholtz and Susan Gibb.
